Student Responsibilities

To be a participant in any sport or activity is a privilege.  With this privilege comes certain responsibilities.

We encourage that St. Margaret Mary sports come first before any other outside activities.

Responsibility to the team and squad

1.

Attendance at practice is mandatory unless excused by the coach before practice.

2.
Team members must encourage rather than discourage, this means supporting and complimenting team members.
3.
Always respect the coach.
4.
Every member of the team is important.  One person does not make the team.
5.
There will be no betting on games for points, shots and free throws by students or parents.  The first time will be a warning.  The second time will be a suspension from the next game.  The third time will be a suspension from the team.

Responsibility to property

1.
Keep the gym and locker rooms clean-both at home games and away games.
2.
No food, candy, gum, drinks, etc. at practices or home games.
3.
Do not enter the gym unless the coaches are there.
4.
Do not touch the mats.  Do not go on the stage and do not touch anything that is not property of St. Margaret Mary School.
5.
All valuables should be left at home.
6.
Uniform shoes should be clean and never worn outdoors.
7.

Your complete uniforms, provided by the school, should be worn at games. Uniforms should be kept neat and clean.  Shirts are to be tucked inside pants.

Responsibility to others

1.
Always respect the referees.  Their decision is final.
2.
No unsportsmanlike conduct, such as bad language or gestures, fighting, losing tempers, at practices or games.  Any player assessed a technical foul will sit the remainder of the half.  A second technical foul in the same game will result in a two game suspension.
3.
The opponents are necessary for the game.  Treat them with respect.
4.
The coach has the right and duty to pursue disciplinary action within the Guidelines of the S.T.M.M.S.A.A.  These guidelines provide for action up to and including permanent suspension from team participation.

Attendance

The student must attend a full day of school the day of a sporting event (if it is a school day) in order to be able to play in that event later that day.  A funeral is an excused absence.

Policy on Parental Cooperation

As members of the community of St. Margaret Mary Catholic School, we each have a moral and ethical obligation to foster and promote the Catholic values that our faith represents.  The cooperation of parents is especially vital. While we recognize that issues may arise during the course of the school year that will be of concern to parents, the manner in which parents address their concerns through their personal conduct must be consistent with these values, whether at School and/or during any School-related function.  The failure to meet these conduct expectations shall be addressed in accordance with this policy.

While many different types of conduct by parents are unacceptable under this policy, the following are examples of conduct that will not be tolerated:

1.
Disrespect to any person at School or at School-related function
2.

Raising of voices, foul language or name-calling directed at any staff members, teacher, child, coach, volunteer, other parents, administrator, religious or clergy member

3.
Any physical assault
4.
Any other activity considered by the School’ administration to be threatening or disrespectful to another, disruptive to the School and/or inconsistent with the Catholic values that the School strives to uphold

The above is a non-exhaustive list of conduct that violates this policy.  The School reserves the right, in its discretion, to determine when a violation of this policy has occurred.

Any violation of this policy, as determined by the School Administration, may result in corrective action, up to and including exclusion from School events.  Corrective action may be taken may include, but is not limited to, verbal and/or written warning(s), meeting(s) with the involved parent and exclusion from school events.

A parent who violates this policy may be warned regarding the unacceptable behavior and the School will endeavor to provide warnings to a parent prior to taking more severe action.  However, depending upon the involved parent’s record of conduct and/or the severity of the misconduct in question, parents are not guaranteed that advance warning will be given prior to being excluded from future School events.  The presence of aggravating factors (including the presence of children during the conduct in questions, the severity of the behavior, a pattern or record of unacceptable behavior, etc.) shall be considered.

The decision of the Principal or Assistant Principal regarding the application of this policy maybe appealed to the Pastor.  The decision of the Pastor is final.

Volunteer Contract of Participation

The S.T.M.M.S.A.A. require that all persons who volunteer to be a manager/coach to sign and agree to the following philosophies and codes of conduct.

You must attend Protecting God’s children, Catholic Coaching, read and sign the Diocesan Code of Conduct, the Sexual Misconduct with Minors, complete the Emergency Contact Form and Background Check and annually watch the Blood Born Pathogen Video and successfully complete the quiz.

It is important that you understand what your are volunteering for.  These positions are ones of responsibility and commitment to the children who participate.  The manager is responsible for the operation of a team, while a coach assists the manager, within the policies, rules and guidelines of the organization.  The team staff is responsible to the Athletic Director, who is their primary resource and contact person within the organization.  A considerable commitment of time is required during the season.  The scheduling of practices is usually up to the team staff and coordinated with the Athletic Director within the guidelines established by the S.T.M.M.S.A.A. and the conference.

First and foremost our young athletes are involved to have fun.  In order to have fun they must have the opportunity to participate, which is your responsibility to provide.  Policies are in place at the organization and conference level that address participation.  Fun is a mechanism which is used to help develop young athletes and instruct them in the sport which they participate in.  The programs are recreational in nature.

A good working philosophy is “Athletes First, Winning Second”.  Winning to an individual young athlete may not be winning the game, but performing well for only a brief moment.

Your participation should be fun and rewarding as well.  The association will help you achieve not only your goals, but primarily the goals of the children.  There will be a few association meetings which you will be expected to attend.

Spirit Squads

Since one of the purposes of the St. Margaret Mary School Students Activities Association is to install in each student a spirit of pride representing their school that they can share with others, the purpose of the Spirit Squad is to encourage all students to participate regardless of ability and talent.  To foster and encourage a spirit of comradery by cheering players on and involving spectators in a positive spirit of sportsmanship.

1.
Sideline cheers must be performed at each home game.
2.
Halftime routines may be performed if desired.
3.
Spirit squads must be ready and at court side five minutes before the start of each game.
4.
No make-up will be worn.

8th grade will cheer for 8th

7th grade will cheer for 7th

6th grade will cheer for 6th

5th grade will cheer for 5th

Camps

Any camps outside of S.T.M.M.S.A.A. authority and coached by staffs other than our coaches are acceptable to participate in.  These camps cannot be required by the association or staff and non-participants of the camps cannot be penalized for non-participation.

Disciplinary Action

All participants in St. Margaret Mary athletic programs are expected to follow certain rules of conducts which are outlined in the school handbook under the section labeled “Student Activities Association”.  When participants break these rules the team coach, athletic director, or the school principal will decide on an appropriate disciplinary action using the following guidelines:

STEP 1 Infractions which would include disruptive, inattentive, or uncooperative behavior, disrespectful actions toward teammates or equipment will result in the following actions.  The player or players will be directed to leave the playing floor and will sit where told in full view of coaching staff.  The affected players will not leave the gym or room and will not engage in any further disruptive behavior.  The length of time the player or players are to “sit out” period will not extend to future practices while in STEP 1 disciplinary action.  If a behavior problem continues or escalates, a more severe disciplinary action may be required.
STEP 2 This action step will include the notification of the child's parent and a detailed discussion of the problem.  The actual punishment will be discussed and agreed to by both parties and may include such punishments as suspension for 1-2 practices and/or an actual game.  The problem should also be discussed in detail with the child by the parents.  If the behavior problem continues or escalates the disciplinary action will progress to Step 3.
STEP 3 This action step will include the notification of the parent that the behavior problem has not been corrected.  The coach may request that the child will not be allowed at practice or a game without a parent or responsible adult in attendance to help with correcting problem behavior.  At this point the parent will be responsible for the child's behavior as well as the punishment which may include an extended suspension of 3-4 practices/games.  If the problem continues the last step will be enforced.
STEP 4 Removal from the team.  Certain behavior problems may be of a grave nature which would result in skipping certain disciplinary steps.  Fighting, cursing, disrespect toward the coaching staff, destruction of property, and other such behaviors will be dealt with appropriately.  Suspension or removal from the team are distinct possibilities for extreme behavior.  Whenever disciplinary actions beyond STEP 2 requires the notification of the principal by the coach.  Any extreme behavior should be immediately reported to the parents, Athletic Director and principal.  It should be noted that these are disciplinary guidelines for the coaching staff.  It remains the decision of the coaches if modification to these guidelines are more appropriate for any particular situation.  It should be stressed that the coaching staff should use every reasonable means to avoid having to progress through the disciplinary steps.  Understanding, patience and control should be exercised by the coaching staff at all times.  Only once it is apparent that all reasonable means have been exhausted should the disciplinary actions be implemented.

Parent Communications Process

1.
Parents, coaches, and athletes may identify a problem or area of concern by using the following, “Communications Process Form”.
2.

Download and complete the form and return it to the school office, to the attention of the athletic director.

3.
The athletic director and/or principal will meet for clarification purposes.  A decision will be made and they will inform the concerned parties.
